They Brought Light into the World
I chose the title “ועשו אור בעולם” – “They Brought Light into the World” because the flames of the Beis Hamikdash-style menorah in my painting contain hidden scenes of Jews performing mitzvot—Kiddush Levana, Shabbos candle lighting, Torah study, prayer, bris milah, and marriage—the very acts the Greeks tried to suppress during the era of Chanukah.
For me, this title reflects the idea that through devotion, courage, and commitment to mitzvot, we bring spiritual light into the world. The menorah’s flames symbolize how holiness and sacred acts illuminate every aspect of life, even in challenging times.
The deep golden and copper color palette evokes warmth, sacred light, and the enduring brilliance of Jewish tradition, emphasizing the holiness and spiritual energy within each act depicted in the flames.
